Every April we join organizations across the nation in recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month. Follow along and educate yourself as we strive to create healthier environments for children, keep them safe from abuse, and give them the brightest futures possible.
There are a lot of great resources available in Alaska for child abuse prevention, including Catholic Community Service! Our SAFE Child Advocacy Center is here to answer any questions you might have about reporting, recognizing the signs of abuse, or resources available to families seeking healing and justice.
Know the Signs!
If a child you know starts showing one or more of the possible signs, it may indicate that something is going on:
- 1Unexplained injuries
- 2Changes in behavior
- 3Returning/regressing to earlier behaviors
- 4Fear of certain places or people
- 5Changes in eating
- 6Changes in sleeping
- 7Changes in school performance and attendance
- 8Lack of personal care or hygiene
- 9Risk-taking behaviors
- 10Inappropriate sexual behaviors
All reports of abuse must be reported to the state Office of Children’s Services (OCS) by calling 1-800-478-4444 or emailing reportchildabuse@alaska.gov. If you’re unsure whether what you’ve observed qualifies as abuse, feel free to contact us at cac@ccsjuneau.org or 907-463-6157!
