Southeast Senior Services is to “promote the health, independence and quality of life of seniors in Southeast Alaska through the delivery of quality services and the development of community resources.”

Southeast Senior Services (SESS) works with local, state, and national partners to offer home- and community-based services, including hot, nutritious meals, door-to-door transportation, adult day services, care coordination, senior and caregiver counseling, and a regional senior information and caregiver resource center.

History – In 1974, Southeast Senior Services was organized under the sponsorship of Catholic Community Service, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the delivery of quality human services. When Southeast Senior Services began that year as Southeast Nutrition Program for the Elderly, it opened senior centers in Angoon, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka. Between 1974 and 1983, SESS developed the four centers into a network of fourteen senior centers throughout Southeast Alaska. These centers offer congregate and home-delivered meals, transportation, and various support services for seniors in these communities.

Southeast Senior Services is proud of its service delivery system, which recognizes the vast diversity of Southeast Alaska. Employing a regional model of service delivery, we have senior centers serving 14 geographically diverse communities, serving entire populations of seniors with congregate and home-delivered meals and local transportation. These local senior centers are made possible by partnerships between the local tribal organization and Southeast Senior Services. They are run by local senior center managers, most of whom are Alaska Native.
